The state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) said Hawaii's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.8% in September, up from 2.7% in August. Nationally, the rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2%.

Hawaii counted 675,450 people employed and 19,450 unemployed, in a labor force of 694,900. Without seasonal adjustment, the state rate was 3.2%, up from 2.9%.

Nonfarm payroll jobs were flat from August. Leisure and hospitality added 1,000 jobs, and smaller gains came in trade, finance and health. Construction lost 700 jobs, partly because of bad weather early in the month, and state government shed jobs as primary election workers were released. Year over year, nonfarm jobs are up by 400.
